Ban on new uranium mining near the Grand Canyon upheld

By Marcia Eldridge, board member

New uranium mining projects won’t encroach on the Grand Canyon’s doorstep any time soon.

On Oct. 1, 2018, the Supreme Court declined to hear a case challenging the Obama-era ban on new uranium mining projects near the Grand Canyon.

National Park Service

Environmental Action and our partner, Environment America, built support for the 20-year moratorium, which was enacted in 2012, on 1 million acres around the national park.

This Supreme Court decision closes the door on court challenges to the mining ban. But the Trump administration may move on its own to overturn it. We’ll be ready.
