Right now there's a proposal to make up for budget shortfalls by selling off 800,000 of public lands. We need to make sure our elected officials know how important these places are to us.

Pledge to Pay the Difference

The cost to double the gas mileage in our cars, trucks, and SUVs would be a little under $2000/vehicle. Normally, automakers would pass 2/3 of that cost on to us, the consumer.

Even with such a low cost, and with consumers demanding more fuel efficient cars, they remain reluctant to increase their fuel economy, claiming it would bankrupt them. This, despite Ford closing 14 plants, and laying off 30,000 people because their fleet gets such low mileage.

So we're taking matters into our own hands. Pledge to the big three (Ford, GM, Chrysler) that if they double their standard, we'll pay the difference.

Big Three Automakers - I pledge to you that if you double the mileage standard of your vehicle fleet from 27.5 mpg to 55 mpg, and your light truck/SUV fleet from 20.7 to 41.4 mpg, I will not only purchase one of them the next time I buy a new car, but I will also pay the difference of cost to increase the standard. It's time for America to be #1 again. Please lead the way.
