New York City Council welcomes anti-styrofoam activists!

Doing environmental work, it's easy to feel like the planet has no political party. This is good in that environmental issues affect all of us, regardless of affiliation, but it is also bad because it often feels like no political party has our back.

So it's nice, once in a while, to get a warm welcome from politicians. It's a reminder that they do appreciate our support, especially when they take stands that potentially antagonize wealthy interests.
 
Now I'm not saying we should get used to that feeling. It is rare, and we need to keep pushing until it isn't rare any more. We will know we have succeeded when the politicians change their views towards ours, not when we stop pushing controversial.
 
So I am happy to report that the New York City Council seems very open to a styrofoam ban, as you might expect, since the mayor made it one of his top priorities in the State of the City address.

I got your public comment, Keystone XL

It has been one week since the public comment period opened on the State Department report on Keystone XL. Mother Nature has already delivered her public comment, what follows is mine, and you can log yours by clicking here.
 
This report was paid for by oil companies. Apparently our State Department has learned nothing from drug companies and their studies, where you can get the study you pay for but that information will come out, and you will look bad. It will come out, and you will look bad. And thanks to the great reporting of Brad Johnson and Inside Climate News, the State Department already is beginning to be seen that way.

Big Oil Wants to Repeal Clean Energy Standards

As Americans push their state lawmakers to increase the use of green energy sources, the oil industry is not politely stepping aside to allow a transition from dirty fossil fuels to clean energy sources like wind and solar power.

In state legislatures across the nation, the American Legislative Exchange Council -- the top front group representing polluters like the oil industry -- is helping lawmakers write bills that would repeal the state's commitment to clean energy.

Two years after Fukushima, there are dozens of nuclear plants just like it operating in the U.S. But President Obama and too many members of Congress are still touting nuclear as 'safe' and 'clean'. It's not - it's a disaster waiting to happen that could impact up to 50 Million Americans. 

Check out the map to see if you live in a nuclear danger zone,  and then tell Congress and President Obama to both shut down existing nuke plants and to stop approving new ones.

This lady can kick global warming's butt, that guy not so much.

President Obama sent mixed signals on his commitment to environmental protection when he announced his nominations to lead the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency. 

His EPA nominee, Gina McCarthy, is a tried and true environmental advocate with a proven track record on regulating pollution that causes global warming. But Obama's nominee to run the energy department, Ernest Moniz, is an apologist for fracking and nuclear power who said that renewable energy isn't ready to power our economy (obviously we know it is).

If this administration is going to seriously tackle global warming, it needs leaders like McCarthy, not Moniz. And we're going to need McCarthy to step up, and if necessary step OVER Moniz and other less-bold climate warriors in Obama's cabinet. Here's what we think should be on her to-do list as soon as the Senate confirms her appointment:

The fracking fight has already come to my doorstep in a cozy corner of northwest Philadelphia. During election time, there were as many “No Fracking” signs as there were Obama campaign signs, which means a a lot. I even know an anti-fracktivist who walks her dogs on my street.

Feds to BP: Don't Cry Over Spilled Oil

Not that we should be surprised, but US Justice Department lawyers are negotiating a deal to settle its lawsuit against BP over the 2010 oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The deal would have BP pay $16 billion in fines, a large chunk of which would be eligible for BP to claim as a tax break.

When I heard the governor of Colorado — a Democrat — was threatening to sue over fracking, my hope was that he was suing to prevent it, or hold those who do it accountable to environmental laws.

But I was wrong.
