I'm not a naive guy, per se, and frankly had thought I'd seen quite a bit in my life. That is until the media began reporting on the new plan BP has cooked up for stopping the horrific spill in the Gulf. Golf balls, old tires, and trash.

The Gulf oil spill is rapidly moving from terrible tragedy to full-blown disaster, and sadly, each day brings more news about the general ineffectiveness of our society to deal with such a calamity.

We should in no way be shocked that the original estimate BP gave the world in regards to the spill -- 210,000 gallons a day -- could very well in fact be way way way off.

One side effect of the Gulf spill has been a so-called crackdown on the offshore drilling, in particular over the increase up in Alaska. Of course, Shell has come out telling us that they're good and not to worry.

Between the massive oil spill in the Gulf and the coal mine explosion in West Virginia, more than forty people have died this year as a result of our addiction to dirty energy. This doesn't even count the impact burning coal and oil has on our environment and public health.

President Obama is promising that he is frustrated by the pace of the cleanup of the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, BP is attempting to put another lid on the actual spill, a mile beneath the surface (the first one having failed).

Shockingly, it's coming out that one method of containing the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is to, wait for it, use untested toxic chemicals.

It's a pretty cruel irony that the same week there's a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Interior Department signs off on Cape Wind.
