You Simply Can't Trust the Oil Industry
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-06-16
I'm going to zoom right past President Obama's remarks on the Gulf disaster, and skip ahead to the oil industry's selling out of BP with a bag full of manure. You see, the heads of the OTHER oil companies have been pretty mum since the spill, but that all came crashing down when they appeared before Congress this week and all said, 'oh yeah, that wouldn't have happened on OUR rigs'. Obviously, they're full of crap. But when you read up on the testimony in the NY Times, you see this gem: "the other executives came under criticism as well, particularly for the response plans that they prepared for a major spill in the gulf. The five companies submitted virtually identical plans to government regulators and to the committee. The 500-page document, prepared by a private contractor, refers to measures to protect walruses and gives a phone number for a marine biologist who died five years ago." WHAT?!? Really, they want to protect the walruses in the Gulf and their expert biologist is five years in the grave? How did they respond? ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tilerson commented, ""It's unfortunate that walruses were included...emphasis is always on preventing these things from occurring, because when they happen, we are not very well equipped to deal with them." Perhaps the best argument yet for a total ban on offshore drilling. |
