What More Proof Do We Need?

Imagine if your neighbor's house caught fire, and set fire to you whole block, burned down twenty houses and killed nearly a dozen people. Now imagine finding out you neighbor had taken the battery out of his fire alarms because he was tired of the alarm going off every time he burned his fish sticks in the oven. How mad would you be? Well, it turns out this is exactly what happened on the BP rig that blew up, sank, and caused the greatest ecological disaster of our lifetimes. Those in charge turned off the warning alarms because they didn't want to get woken up in the night from false alarms. According to testimony, this was standard practice not just on the Horizon rig, but throughout the rigs in Gulf. You can read the NY Times article on the testimony here. This testimony only underscores the point we've been making for years. You simply cannot trust the oil industry to do what's right for the public's health, for public lands, or for the environment. They are driven by profit and greed. They will cut EVERY corner until things - literally - blow up in their face. Which is why we cannot trust them with our most precious natural resources.
