What If?
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-04-05

Everyone's all into nuclear power these days, and it's scaring the heck out of me. I keep hearing, 'but it's so much safer now' and that it's the future of the energy portfolio in the United States.

But here the thing -- it only takes one terrible accident and millions of people could suffer, be harmed, or die. I found this article this am (http://www.thenewsherald.com/articles/2010/04/03/news/doc4bb774970f640919249272.txt) which talks about a plant operating at four percent because a wire failed and there was a problem.

One failed wire. That's it, and you've got a nuclear plant that has to cut down to four percent of its operation. If the darn things are so safe, why is it any time there's a loose screw, faulty wire, or leaky pipe, the places freeze up?

Because all it takes is the wrong faulty wire. They're playing with something far far worse than dynamite. And while, yes, there have been no major accidents in the U.S., it seems like, 'dumb luck' isn't a good thing to bet on. Just ask the folks in Vegas.
