Well, What Were They Expecting?
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2009-12-28

I'm a big fan of Greenpeace, let me say that. I have some issues here and there, but overall, a good group. But to hear the head of GP International whining about campaigners being denied bail around the holidays is a little silly.

You can read the full article here, but basically, during the Copenhagen climate summit, some campaigners from GP crashed a party given for various heads of state. At the party the campaigners unfurled a banner that read, 'Politicians Talk, Leaders Act'.

That's all well and good, and I agree with the statement all that, but it's funny that the campaigners then got arrested, and were being held until Jan. 7th, which is where Kumi Naidoo  - the Director of Greenpeace starts complaining, "to deny folks bail to be home with their families over Christmas and New Year's ... seems unnecessarily inhumane and cruel behavior on the part of the Danish authorities."

I don't believe it's cruel, nor is it particularly inhumane. Those are the conditions campaigners sign up for, and frankly, if Greenepeace weren't getting in trouble to spread the word, they wouldn't have staff, members, or a budget.
