Way to Take a Lame Stand Kentucky
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-02-22
Poking around the internets this AM, I discovered that the state of Kentucky has taken the bold stand of passing a non-binding resolution "asking coal companies to plant pollen-producing vegetation when they finish" blowing up and leveling mountains. What? Really? Turns out that mountaintop mining reduces the amount of vegetation that can sustain bees, and has been a contributor to the decline in bee populations. Of course, we need bees to survive, as they help to pollinate flowers, which in turns helps to make sure our food supply is sustained. It's utterly shocking to me that instead of stopping the practice of mountaintop mining, they're asking the coal industry to plant pollen producing vegetation. What's offensive is that it's a nonbinding resolution -- essentially a suggestions, which they are welcome to ignore, should they choose. What's the point? |
