The Continuing Saga of the Spill
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-05-12
President Obama is promising that he is frustrated by the pace of the cleanup of the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, BP is attempting to put another lid on the actual spill, a mile beneath the surface (the first one having failed). Interior Secretary Salazar is working to change the regulations around oil spills, and of course, worse and worse estimates are coming in around how bad the damage will be to the Gulf coast, an area still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina almost five years ago. It's all so depressing, and I wanted to lighten the mood by posting some cute images of polar bears frolicking on the ice that I found online. Then I realized that those bears were frolicking just off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Which got me to thinking about that drilling fight. And about Sarah 'Drill's my middle name' Palin. Since hearing Rush Limbaugh suggest the Gulf will take care of itself, I've really avoided listening to the pro-drill anti-environmental commentators. But I couldn't resist. I thought, 'I wonder what ole Sarah P. has to say about this spill?' Well, she had this little gem "Gulf: learn from Alaska's lesson w/foreign oil co's: don't naively trust". Of course, she didn't mention anywhere that the dang blasted foreign oil company BP employed her husband for close to two decades. All of this is, of course, why I'm here today, saying for the 10,000th time, that we need to stop drilling off our coasts for oil. We need to break free from oil altogether, get our act together, and start powering our nation differently, if we actually want change. |
