The Climate Bill Needs a Stronger RPS
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2009-07-02

I'm guessing you haven't read the 1000+ page climate bill, so you may be shocked to learn that despite everything that IS in the bill, one critical solution to global warming is missing: a mandatory minimum amount of energy produced by renewable energy like wind and solar power.

If we're going to really limit greenhouse gas emissions, we need to mandate that 25% of our electricity be generated by wind and solar by 2020.

The action is moving to the Senate now, so take a minute, and call on your Senators to make sure we get 25% by 2020.

Right now most of our electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels like coal - a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Mandating that electric utilities generate 25% of their power from wind and solar is a great way to turn that around.

Of course, the utilities (not to mention Big Coal) don't particularly like that plan - and lobbied hard to keep the renewable standard watered down in the climate bill that passed the house last week.

And that's why we need you to call on your senators to make sure the Senate version is stronger - 25% renewable by 2020.

When you're done taking action, please invite your friends and family to take part.
