Oil Companies Fund Astroturf Efforts in California
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-04-19
There's a good write up in the LA Times about the ongoing battle in California over global warming legislation. You see, California got fed up with complete inaction from the feds under President Bush, so took matter into their own hands, and passed a lwa mandating they get their emissions down 15% by 2020. This should be simple enough, but conservative lawmakers and the oil industry want to repeal the law, and are using the initiative and referendum process that is highly popular in California. The problem of course is that I/R was meant to act when the state legislature was failing to take action on important issues -- not to repeal laws passed by a democratically elected legislature. Of course, it's a popular way of governance, because an oil company can fund an initiative campaign to collect signatures, put an issue on the ballot, and then fund a massive ad campaign to make sure the initiative passes. As you'll see in the article, there's a boycott going on of Texas based Valero oil, who are one of the top funders of the repeal gang. I would support that.
