Mission Accomplished?

So, BP is talking about having the well stopped for good this week, and as no new oil has pumped into the gulf for a couple weeks, it would seem that everyone is quick to declare, 'crisis over'. The truth, of course, is far more sinister. As the well gets plugged up and the task at hands turns to environmental recovery, we run the risk of the cameras going home. Which gives the government and BP the opportunity to shirt and/or half-ass their duty in cleaning up the spill. An old friend of mine, Aaron Viles, summed it up pretty nicely when he said he hopes this doesn't become a 'mission accomplished' moment for this disaster. When you consider that the 21 year old Exxon Valdez battle is STILL being waged in the courts, the odds that this disaster will get cleaned up quickly and proporly is slim to none. Of course, if we weren't drilling in every conceivable place for oil, maybe we could spend money on something a little better for our country. Like schools. |
