Missing the Ice Pack for the Warmth
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-02-18

There's been a lot of talk about Himalayan Glaciers lately. Turns out the award-winning 2007 IPCC report on global warming had a factual error, and now the climate change deniers are having a field day.

Turns out, in 1999 one glaciologist said that "small glaciers in the eastern and central Himalaya are declining at an alarming rate and in the next 40-50 years they may lose substantial mass".

Unfortunately, the reporter covering the story said that by 2035 the Himalayans could be gone -- an obvious exaggeration and misrepresentation of the scientist's position.

So while every day there are more and more articles slamming the IPCC, the UN and those of us fighting global warming, there's a critical piece missing.

Thanks to global warming, the Himalayans ARE in trouble, and we ARE seeing a change in the ice pack. But for some reason, every one is focussing on the methodology and shoddy work, rather that the reality of the situation.

Fine to critique the IPCC, and hold them to an even higher standard next time, but them screwing up doesn't change the fabric of reality.
