In For the Drill
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2009-06-18

Remember the chant rising up at the Republican Convention? They shouted "DRILL, BABY, DRILL!" and while we have a new administration, those cheers haven't been lessened in tone or volume.

Last year, using high gas prices as an excuse, Big Oil convinced a weak-kneed Congress to abandon a 20-year moratorium on new offshore drilling rigs. Now they're working to get access to these newly opened areas.

Take a minute right now and email Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to keep Big Oil from going in for the drill:

Our nation has a serious addiction to oil -- and the way to break free is not to keep using the stuff, but to wean ourselves off of it. We cannot destroy every last natural place of beauty for a quick fix.

The United States' beaches and coastlines bring in billions in tourist dollars every year and provide a place of rest and relaxation for millions. Millions who will be ill served by kowtowing to Big Oil so they can make a little more money off our addiction.

When you consider the natural wonders of our coastlines, what do you see in your mind's eye? The fine sand beaches of Pensacola? The cliffs of Big Sur? Whales swimming around Provincetown?

Or do you imagine the oil derricks off the coast of Galveston? A beach closed sign?

Please send an email to Sen. Reid, and call on him to keep offshore drilling off any legislation that comes in front of the Senate.
