I'm all for opening our coasts
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-04-26
To wind power, that is. Last week, an offshore oil rig exploded, sunk into the Gulf of Mexico, and is currently leaking 42,000 gallons of oil a day. This is a grisly reminded that the myth of clean and safe offshore oil drilling is just that, a myth. Our coasts could provide a huge amount of energy via wind turbines. One such plan -- the Cape Wind Project in Massachusetts -- has been bottlenecked for a decade, and this week Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will announce the administration's plans for the project. Please send Mr. Salazar an e-mail right now and tell him we need to open up our coasts -- not to oil, but to wind. Recently, Sec. Salazar announced intentions to open hundreds of miles of coastline to offshore drilling -- land that had previously been off limits. The oil rig explosion in the gulf last week–the loss of human life and the spilling of thousands of gallons of oil daily into our waterways—is a painful reminder that oil is simply not an appropriate energy solution. Meanwhile, clean, renewable wind turbines could be placed offshore to provide an ongoing energy supply with little harm possible to our environment -- but it's been blocked and stalled for a decade. Now, Sec. Salazar has a chance to redeem the Obama administration by coming out in support of the Cape Wind Project. So please, send an e-mail to the Interior Department, and let's make sure they support Cape Wind. |
