If it's so safe, then why are they closing Yucca
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-03-05

It's funny how one article in the WSJ is enough send me off my rocker for the day. You see, they talk about two interesting things. First off, that the federal government has officially announced plans to dump the nuclear waste storage facility at Yucca Mountain in Nevada -- a true political hot potato over the last ten years.

At the same time, the article goes on about how Democrats in Congress are fighting and pushing back on Obama on a number of issues.

I have a few thoughts, as you can imagine.

Firstly, kudos to the Obama administration. One thing that's pretty funny, however, is that in this mad rush to build new nuclear plants, and the insistence  that they're totally safe, great, blah blah blah, people seem to forget that there is a massive amount of radioactive (re: deadly) waste that nobody knows what to do with.

Secondly, it's getting tiring to listen the media deride the Democrats for having differences of opinion. I'm not the biggest Democrat in the world, necessarily, but I can say this. I absolutely hated that when President Bush was in power, Congress did his biding, no questions asked.

For a democracy to last and thrive, you need to have open debate and discussion, and move forward based on the merits of the arguments. Not just brow beat people into submission.

Yet the media looks to jump on any disagreement within the Democratic party (or any movement for that matter) as signs of weakness. I would argue they're signs of strength.
