I really hate being right sometimes
Posted by Dan stafford on 2010-04-01

I thought about doing a funny little April Fool's thing, but the sad truth is that I'm too outraged by yesterday's announcement by the Obama Administration that they're opening up a bunch of new coastline to offshore drilling.

There's no simpler way to say this -- a new or clean energy future simply cannot include increasing offshore drilling sites. That is ensuring we remain addicted to oil for the long term, and wrecks our environment in the short term.

Back when he was Candidate Obama, he said he was open to increasing drilling off the coast of Virginia. I sent out an action alert asking people to call on him to reverse this position. I received scads of emails from Environmental Action members saying that I had better shut up and support Obama.

That once elected he'd do the right thing. That Obama would be better than anyone else on these issues, and he was simply placating the center and right.

Well, here we are, 513 days after I cast my ballot for him, and he's doing the exact thing I was terrified he would do. What I said back then was, "we have a better chance of changing his position when he's a candidate than when he's president". I warned people that bad positions turn into bad policy.

And I hate that I was right about this. We as an organization are outraged at this move, and will do everything in our power to reverse it.
