I feel badly for this guy
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-03-12

Over at the Discover Channel, this nice-seeming guy (Kieran Mulvaney) has done a solidly in depth set of articles called "Climate Myths & Questions". While I haven't read and digested it all, at the outset, it seems pretty good, and is focused on the science of what's going on more than the politics of how to fix it. So that should be good, right?

Well, sadly, if you read the comments section, it's full of shockingly negative thoughts about environmentalists destroying America, Discovery being firmly in the progressive camp, and so on.

Our side isn't much better, working snidely to pick fights with people. It's enough to drive a good reporter away from an important issue, which of course, is a danger.

Of course, the bottom line is, this is CLASSIC manipulation of the story on behalf of the polluting lobby. It's clouding the issue with useless information, because clouding the issue gets the same result as refuting it.

That is, there are three options. People seriously believe global warming exists, is fixable, and needs to be fixed. Then there's action.

Option two is, people don't believe one of those elements, and therefore there's no action.

Lastly is confusion. When confused about what action to take, or any element leading to a decision, inaction is the default decision.

So two of three times, action takers lose. And THAT'S why it's important to talk to people about these issues. Because even when you think you've won, the opposition will bounce back and cloud the issue.

Heck, look at nuclear power. Thirty years ago, Americans couldn't ditch it fast enough.
