Help Stop the Biggest Mining Project in WV
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-05-17
Between the massive oil spill in the Gulf and the coal mine explosion in West Virginia, more than forty people have died this year as a result of our addiction to dirty energy. This doesn't even count the impact burning coal and oil has on our environment and public health. Thankfully, right now, the EPA is working to veto the permit for the largest mountaintop removal mining site in West Virginia. They're holding a public comment period from now until June 1st -- and they need to know we're behind them. To end them your comment, simply click here. Under the Bush administration, the mining industry was able to get just about anything it wanted -- including the Clean Water Act permit for the largest mountaintop removal mining project in West Virginia -- the Arch Coal Spruce Number One mine. This type of mining, however, is horrific for our waterways. It clogs and poisons streams and rivers -- in fact, Appalachia has lost over 500 miles of waterways to mountaintop removal mining. President Obama's EPA has decided they'd like to veto the Clean Water Act permit -- a move Environmental Action wholly endorses. Their veto however, needs your voice of support. After you submit your comment, please ask your friends and family to join in the effort -- and thanks for your work. |
