Didn't Turn Out That Way
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-08-25
When President Obama placed a moratorium on deepwater offshore drilling, the oil industry and right wing media entertainers began yelling about how all the rigs would leave the Gulf, tens of thousands of jobs would be lost, and that - yet again - we were at the brink of armageddon as a result of us crazy environmentalists who enjoy an ecosystem without five million barrels of oil. Wellll, it turns out that those horrifically dire predictions have come in nowhere close to what we being predicted. According to the NY Times, of the 33 rigs in the Gulf, only two have moved elsewhere. And instead of thousands of jobless claims, there have been hundreds. Of course, this only makes my stomach turn, because, frankly, those damn rigs need to get out of the Gulf. When I think about drilling accidents in the Gulf, that Einstein quote about insanity comes to mind - it's doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. We need a ban on new offshore drilling, and we need to work towards a total phase out of all offshore drilling. |
