Continuing to Lag on Mountaintop mining
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-03-08

President Obama's EPA is continuing to lag on making a decision on the largest mountaintop removal mining project in West Virginia.

I don't mean to put too fine a point on it, but the act of mountaintop mining is clearly on the wrong side of justice and the wrong side of environmental protection.

There is simply no way a case can be made that you can clear-cut a mountain, blow the top off with dynamite, and then dump toxic waste into the nearby streams, polluting them or killing them off altogether, and have it be considered in any way shape or form environmentally safe.

It's just not possible.

Not to mention it furthers our dependence on fossil fuels, and contributes to global warming in the shape of burning coal.

So while the EPA dithers on the issue, the coal industry is marching forward, AND is able to chide the Obama administration for not having clear goals and standards.
