Community Map of the Oil Spill
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-06-28

I've been poking around looking at all the horrific info on the Gulf oil spill. We made a counter to track a rough approximation of how much oil has been dumped into the Gulf as a result of the accident, which is good, but I found a great map online that everyone should check out.

The Louisiana Bucket Bridgade, along with some badass students at Tulane, have put together what is essentially an online tracking of oil finds. People can post where and how they've experienced the crisis, upload pictures, etc. Meanwhile, the LBB seeks to verify all claims to there's not just a bunch of misinformation out there.

People can post protests, oil smells, oil on beaches, oil in the water, or whatever they think is important as it relates to the tragedy. It's a pretty amazing site, though of course, I wish those students didn't need to develop the software for it, and could have spent their time expanding Castle Wolfenstein or something.
