BP oil spill
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-04-30
It's a pretty cruel irony that the same week there's a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Interior Department signs off on Cape Wind. What's worse of course is that the oil spill has made US landfall, and while clean up efforts are underway, the reality is that the rig is pouring 210,000 gallons of oil each day into the Gulf of Mexico. Rush Limbaugh is saying the Gulf will take care of itself, and the White House is touting their response time and clean up efforts. News reports are talking about BP stock falling (along with the other industries tied to the accident). What makes me sick, of course beside the environmental devastation of this type of accident, is that it's totally avoidable. Put simply, if we were not drilling for oil thousands of feet beneath the ocean's surface, we wouldn't have catastrophes like this to clean up. Rush could go back to blustering about something else, those lives lost in the accident would be here, and the clean up crews could be doing something more important. Like building schools or parks. It's disgusting and offensive that these accidents are seen merely as a 'cost of doing business'. At this rate, it's estimated this one rig will have caused a spill that will eclipse the Exxon Valdez spill in a few months time. We simply need to stop offshore oil drilling. It's not safe and it never will be. |
