Best Practices
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2010-06-14

I really do love the NY Times. In particular, their development of the infographic that helps visualize the news in a non-flashy and very helpful way. Like this one, that shows all the places oil has made landfall in the Gulf since the April 20th BP explosion.

It's pretty shocking to think of the actual devastation that has been caused in the Gulf by this spill, and sadly, we'll be feeling the impacts of it for decades to come.

One news report I read recently suggested that if BP had been using 'best practices', the well would not have exploded, and catastrophe could have been avoided.

There's a famous Texas Hold 'Em Poker player who infamously said one time that if everyone simply played the way the way they were SUPPOSED to, then he would always win.

What they're both getting at is the very childish idea that, 'well, if everything goes right then nothing can go wrong'. The truth with poker is, if you put your money on the green felt, you're risking losing it, and if you sink a well into the ground, you're risking a spill.
